AAPI’s 36th Annual Convention
WASHINGTON. As part of its upcoming 36th annual convention, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin has planned a summit revolving around the opioid crisis epidemic running rampant throughout the U.S.

The convention will take place from July 4 through July 8 in Columbus, Ohio.
AAPI noted in a news release that more than 115 people in the United States die each day from overdosing on opioids, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
The misuse of and addiction to opioids, including prescription pain relievers, is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total "economic burden" of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment and criminal justice involvement, the news release said.
The opioid crisis summit is planned for July 6 from 9 a.m. to noon and “is aimed at educating and creating awareness among the delegates at the convention on the growing opioid crisis, and how the physicians can play a vital role in preventing and containing the fast growing epidemic in the U.S.,” AAPI president Dr. Gautam Samadder said in a statement.
Chief Medical Officer at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Vanila M. Singh will be the keynote speaker.
