Biography / Life Sketch : Born in Panaji, Goa, in 1950, Dr. Shetye received his M.Sc. (Physics) from Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay, and Ph. D. (Physical Oceanography) from University of Washington, Seattle, USA. On completion of his doctoral studies in 1982 he joined CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, and formed a group that worked on many aspects of physical oceanography of the waters around India, including the following: description and theory of circulation of the North Indian Ocean, including coastal currents around India; nature of the thermal field of the North Indian Ocean and its impact on the Indian Summer Monsoon; temporal (from tidal to intra-seasonal to inter-decadal) and spatial (such as inter-basin differences) variability of sea level in the north Indian Ocean; dynamics of the tsunami of 26 December 2004; and, physics of ‘monsoonal estuaries’ of India. The group became one of the most productive ocean research groups in India and consistently reported its results in some of the most critically reviewed journals globally.
Dr. Shetye’s contributions to understanding of the waters around India earned him many honours, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (1992), fellowships of all the three national science academies, New Millennium Science Medal of the Indian Science Congress (2000), Distinguished Alumnus Award, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2006), and National Award in Ocean Science & Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India (2012).
Dr. Shetye served as Director of the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, during 2004-12. His tenure was marked by a distinct increase in productivity of the institute; enhancement of its infrastructure, including addition of research vessels; a rapid growth in involvement of the institute in ocean science education; and, opening of the School of Oceanography of the CSIR’s Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) in 2011.
Dr. Shetye has served on a number of interantional bodies that guide global ocean research. In mid-1990s he formulated, at the request of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC, UNESCO), a programme on sea-level studies that involved countries bordering the Indian Ocean. He also served as member of the Global Sea-level Observing System Group of Experts (GLOSS-GE). During 2001-12, Dr Shetye served as Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Earth System Science (earlier Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences: Earth and Planetary Sciences). He has served or continues to serve on a number of influencial national bodies associated with science research and education in the country.
Dr. Shetye joined Goa University, Goa, as its Vice-Chancellor on 17th September 2012
