Biography / Life Sketch : Prof. D.K. Singh, Department of Zoology, DDU Gorakhpur University has exemplary and University teaching experiences of more than thirty six years. He passed M.Sc. in Zoology (1978) in First Division and First Position in order of merit (Gold Medalist). He has studied inhibition kinetics of cholinesterase activity during his Ph.D. and was awarded Ph.D. in 1983. Prof. Singh is actively engaged in the study of molluscan physiology, biochemistry and fasciolosis control over the last 36 years. He has successfully isolated and identified pure molluscicidal compounds from more than four dozen medicinal plants and observed their mode of action on the snails at cellular level. His studies confirm that allicin (Garlic), azadiractin (Neem), acetogenin (Custered Apple), eugenol (Tejpat), 6-gingerol (Ginger), cannogenin (Canna), hecogenin & tigogenin (Ragani gandha), piperine (Piper), sangurine, protopine (Argemone), thymol (Ajawon), trigonelline (Methi) can be used for effective control of fasciolosis.
Prof. D.K. Singh and his research team for the first ever reported the pesticidal property of urine of different Indian cow breeds. His expertization for controlling the snails has been sought by scientific bodies all over the world as evident by Google Scholar. His high impact factor publications are Citations- 2042, H-index- 24, i10-index- 65. His works are recognized internationally in the field of formulation and use of synthetic and bio-pesticides for integrated vector management. Prof. Singh has devised a bioassay method for pesticides using isolated organs of snails.
Prof. Singh has published 177 Full Research Papers (15 Review Articles) in 83 Journals of International repute. He has written a reference book on Pestiferous Gastropods and their control. Lap Lambert Academic Publishing GmbH & Co KG, (2012) ISBN- 978-3-659-15840-7, pp-1-152, Germany and published two chapters on the topic “Pharmacological effect of spices” in Vol.-2 of book In-Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants- Phytochemistry and Pharmacology (2003), 321-353 and Medical and Biological Importance of Black Piper nigrum L. Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants, Vol. 32-Ethnomedicine and Therapeutic Validation. Chapter-17: pp-343-360. RPB Publishing House, Texas, USA.
Prof. Singh has produced 26 Ph.D. and at present 2 Ph.D. students are working with him. He has successfully conducted 15 research projects funded by various scientific agencies viz. UGC, CSIR, DBT, UPCST, DST and ICAR. Prof. Singh has the honour to be on the referee panel for the award of third World Academy Award Sponsored by TWA, Italy. Recently Prof. Singh’s Malacology laboratory is recognized as WHO research collaborations Centre on fascioliasis control programme in India with Prof. Santiago Mas-Coma, Valencia University, Spain.
Prof. Singh’s Malacology laboratory is working in controlling endemic fasciolosis in northern India for the last 36 years. His research team has used direct release, bait formulation and control release system of molluscicides in water. At present his research laboratory is working on natural chlorophyll pigment found in each green plant to control fasciolosis. His Malacology laboratory is the major center in the country, where work on different aspect of snail control is being carried out.
Prof. Singh is the fellow of Zoological Society of India and Academy of Environmental Biology. He is life member of National & International academic societies and editor / reviewer of various International Journals. He has organized two International Conferences in year 2006 and year 2013 on current issues of Environmental science. Prof. Singh has given several lectures in different orientation programs, refresher courses and inspire camp of UGC and DST. He has also delivered invited lectures in different National and International Conferences. At present he is the Coordinator of Environmental Science, Department of Zoology, D.D.U.
