International Conference on Sarasvati Concludes at PU

CHANDIGARH. The 3rd International Conference on Sarasvati River (ICSR- 2019) “ Agricultural Practises and Archaeological Evidences and Exploration along Saraswati River Paleochannel concluded successfully at Panjab University, today.

The conference was organised by the Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Development Board and ICSSR, North West Regional Centre, Chandigarh.

The conference had a wide scope and lofty dimension and the quality and quantity of research papers, deliberations and brainstorming reflected this.

Preeminent Vedic scholars rubbed shoulders with the finest scientific minds, engineers, astrophysicists and academics. During the two days of the conference, there were wide ranging and sometimes quite impassioned discussions and paper presentations of these and a plethora of other subjects all related to the conference theme of the Sarasvati River.

The plenary session was well attended and started the proceedings on a high note. The chief presenter was Prof Vasant Shinde, worthy Vice Chancellor, Deccan IPR Pune who presented his views on the wide spectrum of issues pertaining to River Saraswati.

The morning session, which addressed the theme ‘A comparison between agriculture at Sarasvati days and today’, was conducted by Dr Renu Thakur and was chaired by Vice Chancellor of the Panjab University Prof Raj Kumar. It was another very edifying and enlightening session.

The chief guest was the honourable Agriculture Minister of Haryana, O.P Dhankar who has always supported the endeavours of the Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Development Board and PU.

Prof Bhudev Sharma, Former President (VC, Hindu University of America and Clarks Altanta University, USA was present on the dais, as was Ajit Balaji Joshi, CEO, Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Dev. Board who touched upon the various endeavours of the Board and the plan to construct a third dam which would make the River Saraswati flow perennially. Shri Prashant Bharadwaj, Haryana Saraswati Heritage Development Board, presented the vote of thanks.

The valedictory session, in the afternoon, started with the welcome address by Prof Rajeev Patnaik, Chairperson, Department of Geology and the Conference Report was read by Prof Anju Suri, Chairperson of the Department of History , Panjab University and Convenor of the conference.

The Valedictory address was delivered by Prof Ashvini Agarwal, Member, National Monuments Authority Ministry of Culture, Govt of India in which he enumerated River Sarasvati as one of the most enduring and relevant cultural emblems which has penetrated deep into the Indian consciousness. He also stressed on the need to speedily revive the river and rejuvenate as a symbol of continuity in Indian culture.

Rajendra Singh, Water conservationist and environmentist and winner of the Ramon Magsaysay award addressed the gathering as the Guest of Honour. As a living example of how dedication and commitment can work wonders and water bodies can be revived even in an arid zone such as Rajasthan, Rajender Singh spoke at length on the need to revive the Saraswati River.

The inaugural session of the conference yesterday was attended by a galaxy of luminaries. It was Chaired by the VC Prof. Raj Kumar.

The keynote address was delivered by the preeminent Indian scientist, Prof Ram Gopal, Chairman, Research Advisory Board for Indian Research Institute for Integrated Medicine, Howrah.(UPDATED ON FEBRUARY 9TH, 2019)
